About the event

Important this is an event organized by the School of Computer Science. It is not affiliated with the ACM Student Chapter!

From its inception, the Web was quickly perceived as a vast source of knowledge for people all over the world and it took some time to understand that its potential goes far beyond. Not only did it become the most popular architecture for developing Internet applications it also became a place for all sorts of programs to interact and exchange knowledge.

This is also confirmed by the latest evolutions of AI that produce and consume a lot of information and data on the Web. In fact, using examples from several projects, we will see that the Web is now providing universal hypermedia linking all forms of intelligence and knowledge, and supporting their evolutions on public and private networks.

For this reason, we will show that the Web and its extensions must be designed to be human-centered to enable the futures we want and to avoid the futures we fear.

About:

Fabien Gandon is a Research Director in Informatics and Computer Science at Inria, the leader of the joint Wimmics team (Université Côte d'Azur, Inria, CNRS, I3S), and a professor and co-president of the Scientific Board of the Data Science Tech Institute (DSTI). His Ph.D. in 2002 pioneered the joint use of distributed artificial intelligence (AI) and the semantic Web. In 2004, recruited as a researcher at Inria, he started to study models and algorithms to integrate social media and knowledge-based AI systems on the Web with humans in the loop. In 2012, he became the representative of Inria at the World-Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The same year he founded the Wimmics research team on bridging social and formal semantics on the Web with AI methods. In 2018, Fabien became Vice-head of research for Inria Université Côte d'Azur for a 4-year term, and in 2019 he was awarded a chair in AI by the institute 3IA Côte d'Azur.
